This is a captivating glimpse into the history of Western and traditional medicine in the Western Cape. The building in which the museum is housed was built in 1902. It was once the private residence of the Medical Superintendent of the now defunct City Hospital for Infectious Diseases. The Cape Medical Museum reflects the early days of Western medical treatment, a time when conditions were classified according to disease symptoms. In other words the symptoms alone were treated. You'll find reconstructions of an old operating theatre complete with crude amputation instruments. You'll also find an old dentist chair with its vintage, foot driven dental drill. See Sangoma bones. Discover the medicinal plants used by the indigenous Khoisan people and much more.
