This beautifully preserved historic town so impressed Nelson Mandela that he named his Cape Town presidential residence after it. Situated 140 km from Cape Town and 5 km from Greyton, Genadendal marks the site of the oldest Protestant mission station on the African continent. It also marks the site of the first teacher training college in South Africa. Visitors can wander through the pretty, leafy town, which contains an impressive 21 national monuments. Browse the Mission Museum (Cultural History Museum), the contents of which officially carry "national cultural treasure" status. See the country's first pipe organ, first fire engine and the old printing presses. Be sure to sample the locally grown and produced honeybush iced tea, which can be purchased at the Museum shop.
