One of Cape Town's oldest and most vibrant markets. The cobbled square was built in 1696 and served as a place for formal announcements including the abolishment of slavery in 1834. Through the years it's served as a market for slaves, vegetables and more recently as an informal outdoor market for African crafts, curios, souvenirs, clothing, accessories, and other speciality items.
