LANGA TOWNSHIP VIRTUAL TOUR
The first planned township in South Africa and Cape Town's oldest. Langa means "sun" but the township's name derives from Chief Langalibalele who was imprisoned on Robben Island in 1873. He was later confined to Uitvliegt Farm on the site of a residential suburb adjacent to Langa. Start with an early morning guided walk through the "irhanga" (alleyways) and streets of the bustling Harlem precinct and end with a drive through the more derelict outskirts of Joe Slovo informal settlement. Highlights include the "Dompas" Langa Heritage Musuem for an intimate look at the sadness and triumph of a resilient people. Have lunch or dinner at a local restaurant for a taste of Afro-Western food, and end with drink at a local shabeen (tavern).
