The Taalmuseum traces the variety of influences that contributed to the development of the Afrikaans. The museum's interactive exhibitions provide a hands-on experience of Afrikaans' history, dialects, people and peculiarities. Afrikaans is the mother tongue of more than 6 million South Africans, including 55 % of people in the Western Cape. See "From Rieldans to Rap, tracing the Afrikaans language through its song," to the printing press used to print the first Afrikaans newspaper to Arabic Afrikaans. Afrikaans books and information products are for sale in the museum shop. Guided tours are not charged for but prebooking is essential. Also see the Taalmonument (Afrikaans language monument).
